Purse Seines

Canned tuna comes almost exclusively from animals who have been caught in purse seines. Fishers track schools of fish with underwater electronic imaging or by following schools of dolphins and then surround the fish with a curtain-like net. The edges of the net are slowly cinched together like a laundry bag, trapping thousands of fish and other marine animals, who are then often dragged aboard ships by workers who gouge hooks and pick axes into their bodies.
